Soon or Late

1.        Diseases, dire reminders of our past

  Of our present acts, habits and thoughts;

 We felt proud of our status, wealth and power

 We deem ourselves wise, strong and clever;

  As if supreme or invincible in healthy days

 Diseases come in unexpected and sudden ways

 To curb our pride and heedless, egoistic self

 To make us realize that our strength, pride and pelf

 Won’t help us of our once sturdy stamina and state

 We can’t stop our impending, ruthless fate, soon or late.

2.    Once our senses seemed capable and strong

Once we thought that there is nothing wrong

Diseases pounce upon us like wolves all of a sudden

Like wild creatures out of den, beyond our ken

Our sufferings are silent teachers in one way

To set right our fallacies and carefree days;

Our raging instincts without limit and restraint

Our reckless acts result at last in many a complaint

Too late we tend to feel guilty and repent

What use? Our precious years went waste and spent.

3.     Youth never cares about future impact

 In heat of momentary excitement caught

 They barter their precious time and health

 For harmful habits and acts in stealth

 None can stop the impending results indeed

 Into darker realms they themselves lead

 Sooner or later their rash actions breed

 The voice of conscience they do not heed

 In later times they have to face the inevitable woes

The rebounding impact which they themselves chose.

4.    Addicted to evil ways they find too hard to change

Rising above vices they think beyond their range

To subdue their aggressive ways and will

They have to accept their innate desires and flaws

And realize virtuous and moral laws

If not, it takes ages to come out of net

The hounds of hell pursue till they regret

Till they change their ways and their mindset;

They have to check their ego and their pride;

From destiny’s keen sight their sins they cannot hide.

5.    People chart their destiny and yet blame their fate

Sowing thorny shrubs what can they expect;

Blame thy wayward ways and don’t complain

Self-made blunders; don’t blame fate in vain;

Look deep into thy heart and patiently bear

The rebounding results of thy acts and spare

Sometime to feel sorry and find relief;

No use of abusing others with grief;

Accept your mistakes and thyself control

Free thyself and move forward to find your goal.

My Quill stops for a While

1.                My quill stops for a while

                   I don’t know the reason why

                 “Stop for a moment and let thoughts come; try

                   Not to come in the way; wait for a while

                   She said". " Let me pause and let thoughts come out

                   As naturally as flowers sprout

                   In the still hours of cool dewy night.

                   Let them unfold like blooming rays, russet and bright."

2.              It is not swift like a flight of birds

                 Like a seasoned jeweler, apt words you have to choose

                 Matching with rhythm, no superfluous phrases loose

                 Thoughts come up like churned butter out of curds;

                 In harmony with meaning and structural plan

                If not proper sense and feeling one cannot scan;

                A mere scribbling of lines will not precisely bring;

               With effluent flow your inspiration should sing.

3.           Let thoughts gradually grow

               No hurried pace of your thoughts

              Like ripening berries with golden glow

              Apt words should jet through your heart.

             Let not your mind run wild; be calm.

             Let your thoughts gain strength like windy storm

             The words will patter like pure snowy flakes

             Calm contemplation is what poetry makes.

4.         Don’t obstruct the poetic flow

            As your fancy conjures images with impressive charm

            To show your thoughts in solid concrete form;

           A sense of joy fills you like sunny glow

           In misty autumn with lingering chill

           Poetic creation, an adventurous thrill

           If you rise above narrow mesh of ego and pride

          Putting your thoughts on paper, a joyous ride.

5.     Rest your quill and be calm

        Observe nature in a leisurely way

        Just as in life, your patience pays;

       No hasty ways to choose the perfect form

       For the right fruitful moment gently wait

       Till you find the right expression to write.

       You find yourself purged and serene

       As cool and fine like Elysian Garden green.

6.   Like a gardener with due care

      Trim your work till they get a proper form

      In simplicity lies a greater charm

     A poem should dazzle in proper wear

    Restrain your reckless flow with critical eyes

    Do not think yourself too perfect and wise

    A poem should be a well-cut diamond bright

   Impressing readers with facts and insights.

On my Visit to Vishalakshi temple, Varanasi .

                                                    Temple Gopuram

Gajalakshmi idol above entrance

Lion statues on sides

Main idols in the sanctum

Nine planetary idols

Row of Shiva Lingams

Vishalakshi temple is just 250 meters kms from Kashi Vishwanath temple. This temple was built in South Indian style 1893 and maintained by Nattukottai Nagarathar, a mercantile community from Tamilnadu. Mother Sati’s earrings fell on this holy spot and is regarded as the one of the 52 Shaktipeethams. In the sanctum one can see two idols side by side. The smaller idol is called Adi Visalakshi and is believed to be Swayam Bhu or self-manifested. The other taller stone idol was installed at a later time.

Vishalakshi and Annapurna are regarded as the patron goddesses of this holy city. Visalakshi means “wide-eyed goddess”. Like Annapurna, Vishalakshi gave food to sage Vyasa and his disciples when they starved for three days. At one time both Vishalakshi and Annapurna are identified as one goddess. But in later times they are considered as two distinct forms of Mother Parvati. She along with Kamakshi of Kanchipuram and Minakshi (fish-eyed Goddess) of Madurai are considered as the most important forms of Goddess by Tamil devotees.

Unmarried girls worship   Vishalakshi for getting a suitable bridegroom and by married ladies for getting progeny. Sri Adi Sankaracharya visited this temple in the eight century and installed Sri Yantra. This temple was built in South Indian style and the architecture is decorative with intricate carvings. The opening hours of the temple are from 5.00 a.m. to 11.00  a.m and from 5.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. During festive days like Navaratri in October and In Chaitra Navaratri (March) special poojas are conducted in this temple. On the third lunar day of Bhadrapada Kalai Tij, a   special ceremony is performed.

In the inner shrine the stone idol of Vishalakshi seen. In her upper hands she holds a lotus and a sacred vessel in her lower left hand. She blesses devotees with her lower right hand with Varada Mudra. In 1971 the Tamil patrons installed this new idol beside the smaller old idol.

On the top of the entrance a lovely marble relief of Gaja Lakshmi is seen. Inside the temple there is a verandah with four painted concrete pillars decorated with floral designs and guardian deities. On the ceiling twelve images of zodiac symbols painted. Above the main shrine, a relief painting of Shiva and Meenakshi wedding scene is seen.

 Around the temple, the floor is covered with white and marble tiles in a chess board like pattern for the devotees to circumambulate. Around the inner periphery of the temple, a row of Shiva Lingas is seen, some with Nandi idols and serpent stones and a beautiful Ganesha idol. Behind the inner sanctum, a marble shrine of Adi Sankaracharya is seen. On the right side of the temple outside, in the two gated areas, one can see the sculpture of a horse and an image of Vishalakshi. These idols are brought out during special festive seasons. Within this room one can see a small shrine housing a large Shiva Lingam. Within this room there is an altar on which idols of nine planetary gods are seen.

One has to pass through gate No.2 to reach this Mandir. one has to move through narrow winding lanes, and so it would be better if sign boards and directions are set up on the way for the convenience of devotees. The nearby temples are: Kashi Vishwanath mandir, Annapurna Mandir, Kalabhairava Mandir, Nepali temple and Sankat Mochan mandir.  Devotees who visit Varanasi should visit Ganga River, Sri Vishwanath mandir, Kashi Annapurna temple, Vishalakshi temple, Kalabhairava mandir, Dandapani temple and Dunti Vinayaka also. Their temple tour is incomplete without visiting these holy shrines.

On my visit to Kashi Annapoorna Temple, Varanasi.

Kashi Annapurna temple is nearly four hundred meters away from the famous Vishwanath temple in Viswanath Galli. One can go through gate no.1 to visit this temple next to Kashi Viswanath temple.  As the Goddess of food and abundance, she is worshipped by many Indians. Devotees who pray to her are blessed with material as well spiritual prosperity. In every household people express their devotion to her before taking food. Sri Adisankaracharya might have visited temple as evident from his famous hymn “Annapurna Astakam”, though the present temple was built later in 18th century.

 One has to walk through narrow winding lanes to reach this temple. This temple was built by Maratha king, Peshwa Baji Rao in 1729.  The entrance of the temple is decorated with intricate carvings depicting themes from Hindu mythology. The floral designs show the architectural beauty of this temple. One enters temple through a pillared mandapa and see the idol of the goddess Annapurna seated on a golden lotus.

She is dressed in golden clothes and ornaments. A crescent moon adorns her forehead.  She is seen with a pot in one hand and a ladle in the other hand. One can see another gold icon of Annapurna once a year on Annakut day one day after Diwali. During this time coins and rice are given to devotees who believe those who keep these treasures safe will never scarcity. A large amount of food with many varieties is prepared on this day and distributed to all visitors. This temple has also idols of Lord Shiva, Ganesha, Lakshmi and Sarswati.

According to legend, when Shiva told Parvati that the whole world is an illusion and unpredictable like the game of dice, Parvati became enraged and withdrew her powers of providing food. All creatures suffered from famines. Viewing the plight of her creation she took pity and gave abundant food for their sustenance. Shiva too realized her importance and stood before Annapurna stretching his bowl to receive food. She assured people that none should starve in the city of Varanasi.

Near this temple there is a Bhojanalaya which provides food freely to every pilgrim between 11.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. Nearly five hundred people can sit here and take their food. It has separate sections for men and women. Prasad is also distributed to pilgrims who visit this temple. One can donate amount as charity at this place.  Devotees are not allowed to bring cameras and electronic while entering the temple. There many choultries and shops all along the way to this temple.

Though Varnasi is a well-developed town, the approach roads are very narrow with full of bends.  The narrow winding lanes bring to our eyes the historic and ancient picture of this place. But the pilgrims find it difficult to know the location of this temple. At least sign boards and directions should be set up to guide the pilgrims to this temple. The nearby tourist places are Sri Kashi Viswanath temple (400 meters), Dasaswamedh Ghat (750 meters), Sankat Mochan temple (750 meters), Assi Ghat (3.3 Kms), Ramnagar Fort(7kms), Saranth (9 kms), and the Banares Hindu university (6.5 kms). The opening hours of this temple are:4.00 a.m. to 11.30 A.m. and from 7.00 p.m. to 11.00 p.m

On my Visit to Nandigram, Ayodhya

Nandigram

Bharat Hanuman Milap Mandir

Bharat Milap Mandir

Bharat in Bharat Hanuman mandir

Nandishwar Mahadev

Bharat Kund

Bharat Gufa

Gaya Kup

Nandigram in ancient times was known as Bharat Kund. Nandi installed a Shiva Linga which is known as Nandishwar Mahadeva and did penance to obtain Shiva’s grace and became Shiva’s Vahan or mount. He requested Shiva to reside there and hence this place is called Nandigram. Having darshan of Nandishwar Mahadev gives success.

Nandigram is nearly 15 kms south of Ayodhya and close to Tamasa River where many sages lived.  During the exile of Ram, Bharat ruled his kingdom from this place. He placed Ram’s wooden sandals on the throne to represent Lord Ram’s rightful rule. When Ram declined to return to Ayodhya, Bharat carried Ram’s sandals to Nandigram and ruled on Ram’s behalf. Like Ram and Lakshman, he too matted his hair and lived like an ascetic wearing simple clothes and sleeping on a bed of husk.

There are many sacred temples here. In Bharat Hanuman Milan Mandir, one can see the idols of Bharath embracing Hanuman. There is also a small idol of Hanuman. When Hanuman was returning to Lanka with Sanjeevani Mountain, his huge body cast a shadow on the entire city. Thinking that a demon was approaching, Bharat shot an arrow which made Hanuman unconscious. Regaining consciousness Hauman narrated all the incidents to Bharata. Bharat felt sorry for causing the obstacles. Hanuman met Bharat for the second time when he was sent by Ram in advance to convey about his victory and his return.

Another sacred place is Bharat Kund where Bharat used to bathe every day for fourteen years. According to Skanda Purana, doing tarpan to ancestors here cleanses a person of all sins and gives liberation. Bharat collected the waters of 27 rivers from Chitrakoot and stored them in a well, Bharat Kup, which is located near two Vata Vrikshams or Banyan trees. The devotees are given this sacred water by the priest to drink here. There is an underground cave called Bharat Gufa where Bharat used to stay and meditate and rule the kingdom for fourteen years.

In Gaya Ghat, devotees do Pitru Tarpan before they do Tarpana in actual Gaya. In Jata Kund, Rama and Lakshman removed their long-grown hair after returning from Lanka. In Bharat mandir Rama’s padukas are seen on a throne and Bharata used to sleep on the floor.  According to Puranas, visiting Nandigram gives the same merit as visiting Kashi. All devotees coming to Ayodhya should not miss visiting this holy place where one can see many relics of Rama’s journey and other characters.

The opening hours are from 7.30 a.m. to 10.30 p.m. Food from outside and alcoholic drinks are not allowed here. Room service is there.

The staff of the restaurant are quite helpful and prompt in their service. It would be better if beverages are supplied at 6.30 a.m. instead of 7.30 p.m. as many pilgrims go to temples early in the morning. It would be better to hang paintings describing the antique glory of Benares instead of providing modern paintings which will not match with the ambiance of the hotel. The management and the staff are quite helpful. The check-in and check-out timings are 2.00 p.m. and 11.00 a.m. It would be better if the check-in time is 12.00 p.m. for the convenience of customers. Hotel Kavana provides comfort and clean and spacious rooms with all facilities.

BEGGARS’ RACE

1.            Even in poverty grades exist

        Even among beggars, there is professional race

        Of might and power in various ways;

        Everything depends on status and grit;

        Begging slots allotted to every one

        You may laugh, it is not mere fun.

2.                   Competing leaders even among them seen

       Persons of higher rank wield their power

       Larger areas and popular spots they cover

       Even among them quest for money and love seen

       A code of conduct they should follow

      Their dress code they are supposed to know.

3.               Division of daily earnings from what they got

     Disabled beggars are given a bounteous share

     Some ruffians a larger share declare

     Some meek persons are content with what they got;

     Temples and junctions their favored haunts

     To arouse sympathy, God’s names they sing and chant.

4.        They choose to wear tattered and torn dress

         Some drench their dress coated with marks of blood

         Some appear as maimed, semi-naked coated with mud

         Some as poor orphans, others to impress

         Some use God’s names and loudly sing

         To make god-fearing people some coins to fling

         Some beggars deformed on crutches moan and moan

         Some stir our pity with repeated cries standing alone.

5.            Though all are not lazy, perverted lot

    Some genuine, pitiable cases touch our hearts;

    Neglected by kin and in miseries caught;

    Some have unpolished skills and art

   Unrecognized by society-- they gleam

   Through them as evanescent dream

   Though appreciated only by a few

   Who help them giving a lease of life anew.

6.         Beggars too in their profession face

  Intimidation to be touts for vice

  And lead an immoral life of lies;

 Subject to lust and cheating ways;

 Exposed to grievous diseases grave;

 They suffer till death and none to save

 Till they become objects of lust

 Till they become useless as dust.

Their Voices still I Hear

               Their Voices still I hear

       As if before me, here;

       Their faces still, appear

       Their merry laughter still resounds

       As if me, they have ever found;

       Their witty words still evoke thrill

       Those sweetest moments still my bosom fills

       Like lotus-buds floating on mountain rills;

       Those happy days we lived, not lazily kill

       What a rapid change Time has wrought!

       Those friendly faces and smiles forever lost

       In Time’s fast sucking abyss

       Those happy faces I always miss;

       Like vanishing spirits in air

       Now I saw them nowhere;

       All of them melted like a faery dream

       Those inspiring noble souls supreme

       Whom I always cherish with regard

       Like gods themselves they left without a word

       As days move on, many blows we should bear;

       At anytime and anywhere;

       Is this the gift or curse of growing age!

       No message or tidings we hope to receive

       They have gone away on eternal leave;

       Yet nothing can efface our intimate ties

      Of what they spoke or did, a precious prize;

      Their friendly affection, their wit and advice dear

      Their struggles, smiles and tears so pure and clear

      Ever inspire me as their virtuous souls

      And inspire me towards my destined goal;

     Unforgettable their voices and faces I feel

     Those lively moments none can seize or steal.

THE LONELY BIRD

1.    The bird went on piping in sweetest tone

Melodies sprung from her bosom with ease;

Though she knows that she is alone;

Her melodies melted waste and none doth please.

Still, she went on singing at night

As if to please distant stars and moon-light.

Like a traveler, who hums to himself at night

To divert his sense of dread as there is none in sight.

2.    The source of her song rushed swift like a fountain

Her swelling feelings she could not but restrain

A medley of diverse pleasures and pain

Her flowing thoughts within, she could not contain

Whether others heard or not she heeded not

She felt relief in pouring out her thoughts.

Lonely standing like a saint on her lonely tree

She poured out her feelings undisturbed and free.

3.    Her strange appearance, feathers and hue

Made her a stranger to other feathered friends;

None came near her, nor any help extend

She remained a visitor from distant realms new

None joined her company to sing or swing

Her strange voice did not attract and bring;

On a lone branch she perched steady and alone

None came forward to blend their voice with her tone.

4.    Her dreams, desires and hopes found way

In her sweet songs fraught with feelings deep

The whole vale echoed surrounded by summits steep

Yet none listened to her inspiring lays;

She heard her own rhythms with a sense of thrill

Which flowed with ease like a mountain-rill.

The whole valley responded to her charming tone

Transporting her to remote worlds unknown.

5."For whom will she sing?” you may ask.

In her world of music, she dwells

She sings with ease from her sylvan dell

In fading light at the time of dusk;

Her voice pours out her unfulfilled dreams;

Flowing effortless like a mountain stream;

She sings for herself to unburthen her feelings

Her soul reverberates with thousand meanings.
